In our daily lives, we use
energy to perform our routine functions of thinking, walking,
breathing, talking, and any other action we may perform. The
energy to perform these functions comes from either the fat
reserves in our body or from our daily food intake.
The food we eat is extremely important to our
ability to grow, maintain function, and prevent illness. It is
important to start a healthy eating cycle from birth.
Children grow rapidly. This is due in part from
the food they eat. Food contains the nutrients needed to
fuel our daily lives and also with what is needed to build
bones, muscles, and organ tissues. If we do not receive
the proper amount of nutrients, we will have a variety of
problems, included stunted growth.
Nutrition is important for mothers who are
nursing. Breast milk contains the nutrients a child needs to
grow and develop properly. When the child is weaned, the
nutrients they need are found in the found they eat. The proper
nutrients are needed as they continue to grow. Our cells
continually break down and rebuild themselves. Healthy eating
for growth is important as long as we live.
If we do not eat healthy throughout our lives,
we will store more fat than we need. Or, if we do not get
enough of the nutrients we need, we will feel sluggish and
weak. We need the energy producing nutrients, fats, and
carbohydrates, but we also need the right nutrients for our
organs to do their job. Our body produces hormones and other
substances to keep our organs functioning properly.
The most important thing healthy eating does
for us is to help prevent illness. Our body's natural
defense system against disease is weakened when we do not
get the right nutrients. This allows viruses and bacteria
to attach to our bodies. Healthy eating and lots of water
keep our bodies operating properly every day.
I am sure you have heard the saying, "You are
what you eat." That is true in the sense that if we eat
unhealthy foods, we will become an unhealthy person.
Eating healthy is a daily activity that we must
perform every day of our lives.
